1/25/2024 0 Comments Best second brain app reddit![]() second brain files are complete sentences and structured almost like I'm writing a wiki for someone else, but it's for me. ![]() Raw notes are likely incomplete sentences, random bullets and thoughts, etc. When I convert a raw note and move it into the "second brain", it gets removed. So, my workflow right now is to use the root directory in Obsidian to capture raw notes that eventually get rewritten for the "second brain", and anything that's a true "second brain" capture gets slotted in a folder. One of the key things that has helped is understanding that raw note taking is pretty good to refresh myself on something if it's asked about within a few days, but if it's been weeks or months or I've done a heavy context switch, those raw notes are very difficult to parse (typically because maybe there's 1 valuable line in a note for every 10 random notes that ended up not being useful). I like borrowing bits and pieces from different philsophies and refactoring my vault as I need to. That's where the network of connected knowledge comes from regardless of our use case. In an app like Obsidian, that piece of paper and things on the piece of paper can belong to multiple things in your knowledgebase. A piece of paper (OneNote page) then belongs in one folder (OneNote section). However, OneNote is a great place to store hierarchical information like we might do in a real office that had rooms, file cabinets, folders in file cabinets and paper in the folders. One reason is that OneNote does not support 2-way links. If you do anything in an app like OneNote or Evernote or etc, you will not have the ability to create a network of linked knowledge the way you can in an app like Obsidian. ![]() But we may never know when a topic that we add to our knowledgebase today might one day be related to something in the future that we never would have considered. If you choose to use Obsidian, you like some others might decide if you want to use one vault or two. Obsidian isn't the only app which can do this. There are instances of people back in 2016 referring to OneNote as a "second brain." OneNote can relate information in a way that apps like Obsidian can. The term "Second Brain" can probably mean anything. That blog shows instances of regular day-to-day storage of information into Obsidian. He used a combination of backlinks, daily notes section headers, etc. Searching isn't the only way to get information we need. The way he stored information in his vault helped him deduce the information he needed. (Also, helps me keep track of and remember milestones to bring into 1:1s at raise time. This author of the Practically Paperless series showed how Obsidian helped him replace the battery in his other car. Good luck! Notion is so much fun and helps with my list obsession and checking things off happy feelings. Large monolithic databases can become sooooo slow, so I wouldn’t recommend organizing your system that way. It also has some privacy concerns, so keep that in mind when putting stuff in it. (Has happened once or twice in the 3 - 4 years I’ve been using it.) Notion doesn’t have offline mode and can be really frustrating when it goes down. I need the powerful databases, rollups, views, etc from Notion for the system I have now and to stay organized or Obsidian might be what I use. It has some really awesome linking capabilities and can be saved in a GitHub repo. I like having a centralized place for things, but I also use Obsidian (Zettelkasten style) for my notes on things I’ve read and to summarize things in my own words. I watch videos, scroll the Notion reddit, and look at what works for others to spark ideas in things I’d like to change or add. Also, I would not recommend buying a template. Identify what you need it to do the most right now, start with just that and let the system evolve over time. It is very powerful and can be super complicated, plus its crazy customizable. It’s invaluable.ĭon’t wait until it’s perfect to start using it. I’ve been using it for 3 (maybe 4?) years.
